Does the Yubikey have storage for a password vault? Or do you still have to store your vault either on the computer or in the cloud and then only use the Yubikey to open it? The Yubikey has no storage. Your passwords are stored in a vault in the cloud. The LastPass website has some great videos that describe their security system.

Thanks for posting this info. My funds are at Fidelity, so I called them; after getting bounced around to a few different people, they finally connected me with someone who knew about this. The department they referred me to is called Electronic Channel Support, and the direct number there is Is that your understanding as well?

The correct phone number for Versign VIP support is: That will go straight through to the correct people. Yes, your Verisign credential token or app would only work with your account and her credential would only work with your account. That lets you handle the account as if its your own with your login. Easy process as it is all online. No idea if it works with their new AMEX card, however.

One question for you: INGdirect disappeared last year to be replaced by a bank that bought their accounts to meet Federal requirements. Not sure of the name Capitol1? So how do you happen to have INGdirect. I miss it! It has an LCD that shows the current 6 digit code. I carried a traditional HW token with a display for years. It was just way too bulky and easy to break. I have no financial arrangement with Yubico.

I receive no compensation from Yubico. Has anybody tried it with them? I spoke with our Technical Support Team and provided them with the url below. At this time however, we do not offer an app that you could use rather than the physical device. We are looking at different options however that may allow for this or something like it in the future. Currently though, there is no date as to when something could be available.

Chances are it will work just fine. I spoke with Schwab tech support on the phone today, and specifically asked them about the Verisign mobile phone app. I may well download the Verisign app and see if it does anything with Schwab, because I have a different account with a different provider that does use the Verisign app — just to doublecheck on what Schwab is saying.

Scottrade and USAA are. Noobie question. If someone transfers money or stocks, you have a record of the transfer, know where the funds or transfers went, and have all kinds of civil and criminal procedures, as well as insurance protection, to work for you.

Carrying a fob — more accurately finding the bloody thing — and then having to transcribe small numbers into a website… What is it that deserves this work? Plus, am I the only one that travels a lot? Do these things like Xrays? Can you imagine trying to replace a fob from overseas?

Any help, please. Many if not most brokerage accounts have provisions to wire transfer money out of the account. Wire transfers out of the country may traceable but not necessarily reversible. I carried an RSA token with me for years and I hated it. It was way too big and cumbersome and it was a hassle when trying to get through TSA security in the US.

Most of the tokens are pretty bulky. The slimiest I have seen is the digital security card from Interactive Brokers. It is the size of a credit card and I can keep it in my wallet. Reading your full comment, I presume you meant slimmest, but I actually came to this page to find out what made the IB authenticator so slimy.

The place I work is not a huge company, and we have 2 factor phone authentication so it cant be that expensive or hard to do. I mean WOW the game has better security then most financial companies. Those questions as the second factor can be found on most peoples facebook page or found online.

You cant find a phone key. I just spent an hour on the phone with Fidelity, three different reps. Logging in online and transactions on the phone are NOT included in their two-factor support. I kept trying, and got it turned on. The rep on my 5th! The agents you spoke to are wrong. Call this number to reach the department that handles the security tokens directly without going through uninformed CS agents: Looks like Vanguard is rolling out text message based OTPs.

It would seem the cost of better online security would more than off-set the costs financial, legal, reputation, potential for attrition of customer base, etc. Fidelity and others, take note! My concern is that I download transactions from my accounts into Quicken Mac and Turbotax. Try a wrong code and see if you can get in. It would be obvious if you pay a little more attention. No 2-factor authentication. What shall we do to make them offer that feature? Maybe each of us who has an account with Merrill Edge should email them, asking them to give that feature.

I did not sign up for the Vpn access with Etrade. They discovered an inconsistent log in once and now forced me to use the inconvenient Vpn that I have to call in to reconnect all the time. Bad customer experience — Causing so much opportunity costs for me. For me the Yubikey is definitely the way to go.

I avoid companies that force use of a second factor and then do not allow use of the Yubikey. I do not like phone-based second factors, they make for a slow cumbersome login process. And I really do not like proprietary second factors that require that I trust some third party.

Symantec in particular seems like a dubious choice. Yubikey U2F is an open standard that does not involve a third party in the authentication process, and it is fast, requiring only a single touch.

One possible solution for an alternative to using an app is to use a programmable token. Using a programmable hardware token you can program the seed used by the app into the token, then use the token as a direct replacement for the app.

Most programmable tokens can be programmed either using a USB programmer or NFC enabled mobile phone and once programmed can eliminate the need for a phone in the authentication process.
