It works and i appreciate it. This does not work. I followed all the steps, including reboot, and this does not delete anything. Not only the System Volume Information is still there, but it is still the same size as before: several gigabytes. Well you may argue that it did delete the system restore points, but that is pretty useless if it does not free up the space occupied by them.
If you had manually allocated more space to System restore than the default, you may have to reset that as well. I have tried that and just won't work. I don't need that in that drive and have tried permissions and stuff and think I just scewed it up more.. I know, me bad! Any help would be appreciated Good thing it is a GB.
Not sure what will happen if it get any bigger I was using Xp,then i changed that to Windows 7. I did that steps u wrote,but it didnt clean up data remained from XP. So in narrowing down the culprit i found that the system volume information folder contains 30gb of files. From what I've been able to determine, there is no way to control the timing of the definition updates For instance, mine kicks of at 10am every day while I'm in the middle of work.
I did find an article that discusses a registry entry that "determines how frequent and how fast in hours Microsoft Security Essentials will check for updates", but I've not tried it yet I thank everyone for giving me the answer. Creating a restore point every time I start my laptop was killing me. I do this twice a day. I have 1. It took 30 mins to [delete all] the restore points you can watch using Resource monitor called from task manager.
